[Qgis-user] How to save a virtual layer (from a filtered join) with geography from original layer?

Hi,

I am using QGIS 2.18.2 on a Mac and new to QGIS (or much of GIS), but I
would like to get a specific task done and I am not sure if I ran into a
fundamental limitation of QGIS.

As I tried to describe on gis.stackexchange.com, I would like to produce
shape files for US census block groups (CBGs) but separately for each (or
the few largest) commuting zone (CZ).
http://gis.stackexchange.com/q/227420/28426

CBG shape files are available state by state, but the commuting zone is not
an attribute in the Census files.

Yet if I join a layer of a shape file with another layer with CZ
identifiers, I can only filter the result to get a virtual layer, which
does not export the geographies if exported/saved. See a separate question
specifically on that:
http://gis.stackexchange.com/q/227277/28426

I am aware of some limitations of the QGIS architecture that might cause
this.
https://hub.qgis.org/issues/8141

However, maybe there is a common workaround which I haven't found. Or
anything else you can think of but I could not.

Thanks for any help,

Laszlo
