Hi Patrick,
I don't think that duplicating a layer is such a big problem. I only advice
you to avoid editing the two layers at the same time.
Another option is to use rule-based symbology, which allows you to set a
rule (filter) for when the feature are drawn. If you create non exclusive
filter, a feature can be drawn several times.
