Hi,

 

You also need to make sure that the layer is a line layer, not a polygon or point layer.  First, select the line layer, place it in edit mode then follow the instructions below.

Hi Jon,
if I understand correctly your request, you just need to follow the rule for
drawing lines in QGIS:

- "left click" for the first (initial) point of the segment
- "left click" for the second (final) point of the segment
- "right click" to terminate the drawing of the line.
