You can use processing algorithm "refactor fields" on the layer(s) that
have fields to be changed. This operation will give you a temporary
file/layer the same number of columns and -names as the original layer,
but with column type(s) redefined by you.
Afterwards you can merge the temporary file/layer with the other layers
Just be sure to have the latest (functioning) version of QGIS installed:
3.16.3. From the error message you included, I suspect you have an older
version of QGIS installed. I tried to merge 2 layers using QGIS 3.16.3
and the result was a new layer that contained the merged layers. If
there was a data discrepancy the result values were null's (but no
run-time errors)
