[Qgis-user] What is intended behavior for attributes when copying features between layers?

I found this, from 2012:

"When copying features from one layer to another, attributes are copied and
pasted in the same order they appeared in the original attribute table.
Attribute/column names are not considered. "

I could have sworn that I have previously copied features between layers,
and it matched by attribute names. However, today I just can't make it
work. Maybe it depends on the "provider"?
