The following seemed to fix this problem for me in 3.42.
Existing Project
Navigate to Project > Properties > Transformations. Delete any transformations that appear in the list. Save project.
New Project
Navigate to Settings > Options > Coordinate Transforms. Uncheck the "Ask for datum transformation if several are available" check box at the top of the window. Delete any transformations that appear in the list. Exit and restart QGIS.
Cheers
Steve

In the last few releases I have been having problems with raster images not displaying if the image is not in the same projection as the map canvas, i.e. not reprojecting on the fly. For example I can open a satellite image in WGS84 UTM zone 50 no problems but when I then try to open a vector file in GDA 94 (epsg 4283) in the same map canvas, the vector file does not display until I change the map canvas to GDA94 or GDA94 z50.
I am wondering if anyone else is having this problem. I have used a new profile and the results are the same.
