You said "transfer". You didn't say "package for cable" in qgis using
the qfield plugin, transfer that directory toa directory on which kind
of device and then importing that into qfield, capturing in qfield, and
then exporting to a directory and copying that directory back to the
qgis machine.
Maybe that's not what you did. But your question is woefully vague.
Did you just transfer a data file, and not a project?

Where did you read in the documentation that this was a reasonable thing

What happened when you inspected the gpkg file with ogrinfo?
