To put it simple, "TLS" means: Establish the network connection without
encryption, typically on the standard port for unencrypted connections,
and switch over to encryption during application level handshake, at
least before authentication.  This is pretty common for encrypted SMTP
connections, BTW.

"SSL" in contrast establishes an encrypted connection right from the
beginning.

I'll be able to do the testing myself, as I can reproduce the Drupal
login failure with my own account.
