Wolf, Markus, and others,

After looking at the wiki, it seemed like the most useful contribution
I could make would be to offer some ideas about goals for SOC
participation. Here is a paragraph. It is somewhat more wordy than
what is in there now. If there are any ideas that seem appealing,
please feel free to use them. But don't feel obligated if you have
other goals in mind.

=====================

We seek to encourage the growth of a spirit of community and
contribution by actively involving students in open source geospatial
development. When students see that their contributions are valued by
the development team and users, it helps to build a sense of
responsibility to a larger community of practice that they will carry
with them when they enter the professional world. This is especially
important for geospatial software, where rapidly changing research and
planning needs benefit from sophisticated users--especially scientific
users--who also can contribute to the development of better software
tools. A Summer of Code experience can start students on the road to
joining the volunteer developer community that has made open source
software such an amazing success today. Additionally, by involving
students closely in open source geospatial development, we seek to
provide examples of the value of open source GIS for education in
universities worldwide. Finally, students who become members of open
source development teams will also become the next generation of
developers for industry and government agencies with the in-depth
knowledge needed to introduce and implement open source geospatial
technology.
