[SoC] GSoC questions.

Hi everyone! 
So, as I've already written, I am very interested in some PyWPS ideas for GSoC. I am new to Open source community and I want to do something useful :)  

I have several general (for now) questions.
Do I have to get familiar with the whole PyWPS codebase? 
Must I have any geospatial knowledge to start? 
Are there any levels of complexity for these ideas? 

So, I am considering 3 ideas now: remote output storage, publishing data with help of QGIS MapServer and wps 2.0.0 implementation.
I want to choose one and start working on it immediately.
Can anyone, please, guide me regarding where should I start with?
