MapPoint: The Power of Location

Abstract:

Did you know that the MapPoint web service handles over 25 million
transactions per day? Or that MSN's Virtual Earth web site attracts over 1.2
million unique users weekly? With the high-resolution geographic data, it
offers unprecedented opportunities for users to better plan trips, find
real-time location on a map, view maps on mobile devices, find maps or
driving directions, or even locate satellite images. However, significant
computational challenges have been posed by those applications with the
explosive growth of the volume of geographic data, e.g., data fusion and
spatial query processing.

In the talk, we will provide an overview of the MapPoint products to tackle
these challenges and an inside look at the technologies. Since launching the
first consumer mapping CD-ROMs over 10 years ago, the MapPoint Unit has
grown and developed a product portfolio that includes a hosted web service,
mapping web sites (e.g., Virtual Earth), desktop applications for consumers
and information workers (e.g., Street and Trips and MapPoint), Windows
mobile applications and server products for locating devices in real time.
By enabling customers to locate and track key enterprise assets, as well as
analyze geospatial data, MapPoint enables customers to increase revenue,
reduce operational cost and complexity, and improve business decisions.
MapPoint also harnesses the power of location to make it easy for users to
leverage our features for personal planning and decision making at work or
at home.
