[TCMUG] Using GDAL to make WMS footprints

I don't have much experience with GDAL but I found a forum message that shows how to use it to make geotiffs from WMS calls.  Here's the link:
http://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/gdal-dev/2013-April/035951.html  .  I want to use this to make footprint files of the WMS images.

I tried the suggested approach and got errors.  Here's my command line:

gdalinfo "WMS:http://geoint.lmic.state.mn.us/cgi-bin/wms?request=GetMap&version=1.1.1&layers=metro&TRANSPARENT=TRUE&SRS=EPSG:26915&BBOX=475400,4969100,518800,4991000&width=1200&height=800d&format=image/jpeg"

The error is:
ERROR 4: `'WMS:http://geoint.lmic.state.mn.us/cgi-bin/wms?request=GetMap' does not exist in the file system,
and is not recognised as a supported dataset name.

Can anyone suggest why this doesn't work?
