its the same for us... there a patch. I dont remember the reason...;-(
maybe someone else can explaine... u can put this in ur code.  OL can
try to reload an image more then one time... and if it's not enough, u
can change the pink tile for a transparent tile 
 
OpenLayers.IMAGE_RELOAD_ATTEMPTS = 10;
OpenLayers.Util.onImageLoadErrorColor = "transparent";
