just to note, if UbuntuGIS ships gdal-1.6 they might want to
patch the control files for GRASS and QGIS to use it. Apparently
there was some qgis bug which is fixed by 1.6?

I'm not really sure. If you still have problems "ldd /path/to/library.so" or to a binary can help you see what it is trying
to use.
