This sounds to me a reasonable plan.  I was just mentioning backports
because this is some official resource Debian provides which at least
should be known to the users (obviously it is not properly advertised).
At least the my idea was that users who are not aware about Jerome's
  http://debian.mapgears.com/repos/apt/debian/
should easily find it.  It also seems more sustainable for me in
principle to use this resource and I'd regard Jerome's time well spent
to work together with others on these official backports instead of
seting up a separate repository (if it in fact serves the same purpose).
