I've refactored the disable-examples.patch to not require CMake >= 3.2
in gmt (5.1.2+dfsg1-1~exp7) triggered by your change for Ubuntu. The
next revision resolved some more conflicts with other packages, so I
suggest your try building gmt (5.1.2+dfsg1-1~exp8) for trusty.

Not without a build log to see what is failing exactly. The builds for
Debian unstable succeed on all architectures.
