That's true; the outline is enough to draw attention to that side of the
page.  Also, I think that the shade of green being used may be slightly
different?

+1 An good improvement

The menu on the left is nice and "lite", at least on my browser the
darker headings "News" and "OSGeo Projects", "Web Mapping" and so on
serve to un balance the page.
