You're right about hdf5, sorry, I was convinced I had to modify it but
your fix was sufficient.

However I did have to modify the following files to get gdal to build:
frmts/hdf4/hdf4imagedataset.cpp
frmts/hdf4/hdf-eos/SWapi.c
frmts/hdf4/hdf-eos/GDapi.c
frmts/hdf4/hdf4dataset.cpp
