[STATSGRASS] rgdal doesn't work with GDAL 1.4.0

GDAL 1.4.0 was released 6 January 2007 13:10:21 -0500, so early evening
CET yesterday. No mention reached me (please do write directly to the
package maintainer in such cases, mailing lists can be subject to
back-ups). rgdal has tracked GDAL cvs, and I am now looking at the issue,
which I do not consider critical - anyone wanting to be on the bleeding
edge has to be prepared to handle these slippages from time to time.

If you have a working patch (that works for both 1.3.* and 1.4.0), I would 
be grateful. What you propose below is not acceptable, because both have 
to be accommodated.
