OK, I ran into a similar problem and helped some other people clean 
up their files. I have a tool that was built to chop a big file into 
a lot of littler ones, but it does filter out some bad entities. Down 
load the shp2tile utility and ask it to tile your data into 1 x 1 
files. This with cause it to copy your data into a new file and 
filter out the cases that I check for. You can get it from:
