Modify format of labels from dbf

Hello all

This post is concerning the bug in bugzilla
http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=60 .
Is it meanwhile somehow possible? Any alternative way? I'm just curious,
because I wanted to do it recently and found this bug report.
