Hi Chris,

That is excellent updates for OpenCitySmart. Please write a short article on this for the newsletter and wider community. Thanks.

Hi all

Though AURIN we have developed two open source geoenabled planning support to tools
1. what if ?
2. envision scenario planner

We are now ramping up support for these two opencitysmart tools.

Happy to write something on these two tools for both the group and the newsletter.

Happy new year everyone
Chris

We sure need something to talk about in terms of a seed crystal or multiples thereof.

Right now there is the well-expressed desire,
not even twinkle-in-the-eye yet,
but simply the theorem for that.

Why is doing the most obvious ^right thing^ so damn hard to make happen?

If you are a GIS Professor, please ^demand^ of your students,
the opportunity to build a more beautiful,
and certainly more collaborative, world.

One dedicated CS Department could send this effort skyrocketing!

Hi,

I agree it would be good to have something for the newsletter. Perhaps anyone who see themselves aligned with the Open City Smart group and who has made some progress over the last six months should send a short update to Chris and Patrick and then we could try and compile a progress report?

Also, while I've got your attention:

The FOSS4G North America (Raleigh) call for proposals is out [1]. My colleagues and I at our GeoForAll node -- Andy Anderson (Amherst College), Jon Caris (Smith College), and Alexander Stepanov and I at UMass Amherst -- are about to offer a Web-GIS course this spring. We hope to propose giving a talk on our course and experience in Raleigh - at least one of us will be there.

Who else is thinking about going to Raleigh and we should we try and coordinate some GeoForAll education or OpenCitySmart panels?

Cheers,

Charlie

Emma,

Howdy! Your offer is very thoughtful and most generous, and your personal interest dearly appreciated.

Yes the future tense does suggest that the train has not yet left the station. At this moment, we are carefully applying ourselves to the design so that we might intelligently map this effort for a bright and beautiful future. This world so dearly needs collaboration on solutions that we all can share, OSGEO and GeoForAll at heart.

Working this issue from the angle of urban needs, which are essentially identical for most cities, would do wonders for moving this world closer to mutually supportive collaboration at the global scale, with ^sustainability^ being a key element.

How much time do we have? Any other guidance is also appreciated.

Hi all,

It would be nice to have something included in the next GeoForAll newsletter about the OpenCitySmart project. It is a project that I personally am particularly interested in as well. I am the North American co-editor, and we like to include sections on new software/apps/projects in the OSGeo community. The wiki still uses future tense for the OpenCitySmart project, so I assume it is fairly new.

If someone involved close to the heart of this project could write up a paragraph or two about this project, it could be featured in the next newsletter. If anyone would like to summarize some key features, go over some achievements, examples of applications, etc. it would be a great addition to the newsletter, and you can email it directly to me (eestrong118 at gmail.com<mailto:eestrong118 at gmail.com>) An announcement about the conference will be added as well (with no further action required).

Thank you,
Emma Strong

Hi Chris,

Unfortunately, I personally can't go to this, but it is a great idea to have our group do something there.

I guess the first question is, who from the OpenCitySmart community might be able to go?
After that, then we might have a discussion of what would be submitted -- a workshop proposal or a collaborative paper?

One idea on a Workshop might be something around the use of NASA World Wind as a platform with then a couple examples of how people have used it for some Urban-related application? If one theme of our group is moving in that direction, then that might be a motivator for us to get some proof of concepts implemented? Just brain storming here.

Cheers
Charlie
