Venka,
Many thanks for the updates on the Student Awards for FOSS4G Seoul. Thanks to you, Sanghee, LOC and everyone who put their hardwork and efforts for this. As i told before whichever process for evaluation and criteria that the LOC has taken for this should be respected by all.
It is easy to find faults but it takes lots of efforts and hardwork from many volunteers to make things happen. It is learning curve for all of us and we can refine and improve from the feedbacks for future events. So let us all work together to make the Student Awards happen.
Thanks again Venka, Sanghee, Maria, Jeff , Jeoren , LOC and everyone who put efforts to this.
Best wishes,
Suchith

Dear All,
The info about the "Student Award" was announced on the conference
website [1] long ago. So it is our understanding that the awards are
for students making oral or poster presentations at the Academic Track
of FOSS4G-2015.
Th student presentation will be evaluated by the chairperson of each
Academic Track session by filling-in the evaluation form. Based on the
evaluation, the candidates will be shortlisted. And final selection of
best oral and poster will be made at a meeting of the Awards Committee
scheduled before the closing ceremony.
Sanghee has already prepared the award certificates and the cash award for
the FOSS4G-Seoul Award. The FOSS4G-Seoul Award will be announced at the
closing
ceremony (18 Sept 2015) and certificate and cash award will be handed
over to student presenter by Prof. Sangki Hong (President of KSIS and
co-chair of FOSS4G
Seoul or Sanghee, Chair of FOSS4G-Seoul).
Regarding OSGeo Award, the certificate has been prepared and Jeff has
kindly agreed
to hand over the certificates at the closing ceremony.
I am not yet fully aware about the GeoCat award but have been informed
by Sanghee
(based on his consultation with Jeoren) that the same selection process
can be followed
for the GeoCat award. In case of the GeoCat award, it could be
appropriate for Jeoren
to hand hand over the award.
Maria and myself from the Geo4All advisory board will be involved in the
selection process
apart from other Academic Track chairpersons. It would also be
appropriate that Jeff and
Jeoren, who are also in the Geo4All advisory board, be involved in the
final selection
for OSGeo and GeoCat awards. Will anyone else from the Geo4All advisory
board [2]
be present at FOSS4G-2015?
I hope the above status updates helps clarify things a bit.
Best
Venka

But in my humble opinion, we should not be too prescriptive and should give flexibility for local Geo4All contact in charge of running these student awards to explore new ideas as they think is best to suit local requirements/needs.

But the biggest lesson that i learned from the competition was when some high school students from a remote school in Alaska won the competition as it itself speaks great volumes on its real impact of these OSGeo student awards in providing opportunities . It shows what is achievable for high quality students irrespective of their socio-economic backgrounds if we just provide them an opportunity.
