Arnulf, thou art not alone !

Yeah, I mean, I dislike the current arrangement too!
I work in the oil industry and we have some different conventions wrt
the axis order.
Geologists like it the UTM way, x=E y=N.
Geophysicists x,y are relative to survey patterns (they vary wildly!)
Reservoir Engineers have it like the CG guys, sometimes they have in a
totally un-understandable way.

Z may mean depth (increase downward) or height (increase upward)

This is the beauty of standards - there are so many to choose from!
