The issue here seems to be more about what topics the students should learn
rather than the software choice. But one way or the other, the teaching
should emphasize general methods, rather than software workflows. This is
often challenging to achieve, thus me and my colleagues suggest that at
least two different software packages should be actively used in classes
and at least one of them should be open source. In the following article we
