I have used data from :

* https://crudata.uea.ac.uk/cru/data/hrg/cru_ts_3.23/ (time resolution 
~month)

* A nice blog post pointing 2 dataset  from 
https://pvanb.wordpress.com/2016/06/25/climate-data-sets-which-one-to-select/#more-4969
