[FOSS4G-Oceania] Community Day - tentpole and long tail events

Thanks David, sounding good!

My take is that the decision to hold off on making the form live wasn't
that it's the wrong approach, it's more that the day needs a bit more
planning before we start soliciting proposals. There seemed to be general
agreement at the meeting that a mix of structured and unstructured
activities is desired - I think we could do a little more work on defining
this mix?

I really like the idea of 'three-ish tentpole events', seems like a good
way to provide some structure within which we can function, and make sure
there will be something for anyone who shows up.

OSGeo/FOSS4G code sprints are often planned via a wiki, where people can
propose an activity/project and others can sign up as co-participants...
the FOSS4G 2018 one
<https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/FOSS4G_2018_Community_Sprint> is probably a
good example. I note that it's not specifically aimed at only OSGeo
projects. This could be a good way to organise the code sprint part of the
day, but I understand the concern about wiki editing being a barrier to
entry.

For a QGIS activity, I wonder what shape this could take? We've asked the
QGIS-AU group about this, I feel it's important to have their direct
involvement (if they're willing & able). Nothing solid yet, but we should
keep discussing with them.

Missing Maps event, ie. some kind of facilitated mapathon-style event,
sounds great. Maptime Melbourne (which is mostly Phil & Ed, I'm helping out
a bit) has been getting busy with planning these lately, could be a good
tie-in.

So, one question I have is: would community-generated OSM activities fall
within some kind of umbrella event, similar to the idea of
community-generated code sprint activities? I guess I'm thinking about the
shape of the day, ie. scheduling, components, space, etc, and where those
community-generated OSM activities will fit, so that we have a sense of how
many/what type etc of activities we're soliciting.

If I'm overthinking it, say so... just trying to get a sense of the size &
shape of the thing we're seeking contributions for. Very interested to hear
what others think.

Cheers
John
