You can consider arranging a technical visit to the Office of the Chief Directorate of Surveys and Mapping. As the National Mapping Organisation of South Africa we should be able to put together a technical tour that will meet any requirements /expectations. If interested, please contact me and I will arrange for a contact person that you can liaise with to finalise arrangements.

Hi Alize
For technical tours, it may be worth thinking through the kinds of places potentially available. Not all delegates will be intrigued by the same stuff.
ICT visits: The Centre for High Performance Computing at UCT/CSIR might be interesting, especially if someone can discuss some of the applications that are being run there
Space Science visits: SunSpace in Stellenbosch Hermanus Magnetic Observatory (HMO) Institute for Satellite and Software Applications (ISSA) Bear in mind, ISSA and HMO are a fair drive from Cape Town. Through UCT, access Astronomical science - SALT telescope work, Square Kilometre Array Telescope work
Environmental Science visits: Cape Point Atmospheric Observatory ( a bit limited, but what a drive to get there!) For the botanically inclined, the Cape hosts one of the 7 Floral Kingdoms, and I reckon the SANBI crowd will be only too happy to show visitors around some of this magnificence, possibly out of Kirstenbosch Oceanography/ Marine Biology - The Cape is obviously very interesting from this point of view, perhaps something through UCT or SAEON.
Cultural/Political/Historical visits: Possibly easier for visitors to do under their own steam, but important in that the more 'social science' angle is thematically woven into FOSS4G2008. The museums crowd from Cape Town (I forget their name) would be great to get into contact with on this point - they look after some interesting places.
Also, places like the Modelling Hall at CSIR Stellenbosch and Chief Directorate Surveys and Mapping in Mowbray could be worth looking into.
As to the question of wine tours and the like, my 2 cents is that you should not concern yourself too much with them. Focus on the technical offerings and let PeopleSA handle the more touristy visits.

Hi Alize
The Magnetic Observatory offices (HMO) in Hermanus might also be good
tour.

Subject: [Foss4g2008loc] Technical visits
Hi All
I'm organising the technical tours for the conference.
I need to start contacting the relevant organisations in Cape Town to
organise the visits.
A couple of question for your input please:
1.Is there a budget allocated for the technical visits or are the
delegates to carry the full amount of the visits?
2.Do you think the visits should be more "technically
inclined" like visiting for e.g. "SA astronomical observatory,
Institute for Satellite and software applications, A laboratory or
department at UCT, The Disaster management centre or a laboratory at
CSIR in Stellenbosch" ?
3.Or should we incorporate a more scenic trip e.g "city tour, wine
tour"?
4.Or Both? With an option for the delegates to choose between
different tours?
I need ideas and inputs from you all to start formulating an idea
around the ideas :)
Enjoy the weekend
