Brent,
Frank exactly describes the situation with JasPer. This library in
current state is not suitable for large image processing. It has
significant memory requirements. In fact you will need in 8x-10x times
more memory than needed for storing whole uncompressed image and image
always will be fully uncompressed into memory. And we can't take only
parts of raster.
JasPer author knows about this problems and he is working to help us.
Eventually JasPer should become more suitable for our needs.
