[Gdal-dev] configuring gdal ?

Hi,

I am new to gdal and we are having difficulty 
configuring gdal on my Solaris workstations.

We have created a gdal directory. 
After I cd gdal I attempt to configure as follows:

cd /gdal
./configure

This runs for about 20-30secs returning a few lines
and then reports that it can not find a c program 
on the system.  I have the c++ as well as g++ on
the system and a path defined for these.  

Which g++ and Which c++ returns the proper path
to these programs.

What am I doing incorrectly?
