[Gdal-dev] why does r.out.gdal break other stuff?

I just noticed that configuring gdal using the --with-grass option 
breaks things that used to work.
Is there anyway to have r.out.gdal working without sacrificing other 
gdal capabilities. 
For example, I could no longer run gdalinfo after compilation using the 
--with-grass option.
