Hi Joanne,

People have reported it is possible to get gdal working with python 
newer than 2.3, but the road is generally rough and circuitous. Search 
the archives for previous threads on this:

The easiest method to get a python-enabled gdal is to install FWTools: 
http://fwtools.maptools.org/
