No problem, I will only be able to implement any modifications by the end of
this week, probably. This is something to be let alone for a while before
outlining the best solution to be written. I'm also thinking about how this
approach could provide the same installers from the osgeo4w bundle by using
the same wix configuration file. The windows makefile in GDAL could also be
extended with the targets of creating the installer as part of the GDAL
build process.

Good idea, I will also include a shortcut to perform update directly from
web in passive mode. It would be a convenient way to keep the installation
up to date with the frequent changes provided by the buildsystem. It would
however be reasonable to get some file hosting capabilities at some other
servers to be able to provide the number of downloads are happening this
way.

I didn't find this option working with my Python installation (2.5 and 2.6),
is that something which have been added in a recent point release?
