A lot of format that relies on the PAM(Persistant Auxiliary Metadata)Dataset base class will serialize it in a .aux.xml file.

From the result of "grep -r SetDefaultRAT frmts/ ", the answer is Idrisi, GeoRaster, KEA and HFA.
