[gdal-dev] Raster Attribute Tables

Hello,

I've heard conflicting information about this in general casually and rather
than test and make assumptions on results, was hoping to get some informed
answer.

I've read that Raster Attribute Tables must be created on single band
GeoTIFFs. Furthermore, ArcMap requires that to make Raster Attribute Tables,
the GeoTIFF must be single band. 

Is this a limitation of ArcMap or a limitation of GeoTIFFs? Is there any
reason why it may be a bad idea to generate a Raster Attribute Table for a
multi-band GeoTIFF using GDAL?
