Elena,

the difference is likely due to the PROJ version used. I'd assume in the 
first case to be PROJ < 4.9.3 and in the second PROJ >= 4.9.3

You actually get a better result in the first case. If you add -oo 
EXTENT_METHOD=MOST_PRECISE_TILE_MATRIX, you should get the best result 
in any case

I've filed an issue https://github.com/OSGeo/gdal/issues/4461 about that
