[GeoNode-users] Implementing GeoNode for University

Hi Florian,

We find GeoNode plays well with Esri. We also have many ArcGIS users and we also use ArcGIS Server for some things. WMTS layers served from Esri is a great way to feed layers into GeoNode which provides a nice collaborative environment that gives your users a lot of power. We have developed WorldMap http://worldmap.harvard.edu/ which is a customized version of GeoNode (in the process of being migrated to the latest version of GeoNode) and it has given us great flexibility to do whatever our users want, and quickly. Esri tools are great at some things, Open Source is great at others. GeoNode is a neutral playing field for getting the best of both. A great way to serve massive amounts of imagery from GeoNode is by combining your image files into large ECW mosaics using Global Mapper. Regardless of image or vector format in GeoNode, we use GeoWebCache which keeps everything fast with thousands of datasets and users because the system neve has to create the same image tile twice.

Cheers,
Ben

Subject: [GeoNode-users] Implementing GeoNode for University

Hello Internet,
We currently use a file-system-based geodata storage which holds several hundred gb of geodata. We have access to the whole ESRI Suite and use mainly ArcMap as Desktop GIS and have recently set up an ArcGIS Server to serve aerial and topografic datasets as WMTS.
I would like to create a geoportal for my university which is (also non geo) user friendly and able to hold vector data as well as loads of raster data. Therefore:
1. I have some concerns about Geonode since it "just" supports vector data (ESRI shp) and GeoTiff, which is not feasable for the loads of aerial data we have - I do not want to publish single footprints as geotiffs. How could this be achieved?
2. I also would like to harvest external data sources (CSW) - these should be displayed in the portal, too. Is geonode capable of that?

3. In addition there are documents to share, too.
Is geonode a wise path to choose? How could I achieve my Feature-List
thanks for your time and thoughts,
Florian Hoedt form Germany, Höxter
