 I tried vicky's patch

 and that works too (and with keeping c+11 enforced).

 I'd rather not enforce until 3.8 which is when we had originally planned
 to enforce c+11.

 Though we may have code that requires it already I guess since I haven't
 tested on gcc 4.7.

 K'm going to close this out for now since issue is solved by 195dba5/git
