Thanks Mike.

I will test again on Win98.  I had suspected the fork() implementation.  
Either I was off base or they have cleaned it up.  Other X clients ran 
fine, so I didn't think it was in the Xlibs.  Either way, it is probably 
worth checking out.  I will see if I can make any progress with it.  As 
I recall, you had trouble with getting the XDriver running earlier this 
month on Win98.  Was that using the latest cygwin DLL?

Maybe the new release of XFree is better suited for our purpose.  I will 
let you know if I have success.
