s.in.ascii man page is missing a line:

       d=value
              number of dimensions (default=2)

[here the fs= line is missing]

              The  field  separator  separating the easting, nor
              thing, and category label in each line of the input
              file.   The  field  separator can be a character, a
              space, or a tab.
              Default: space
