Also, the mailing list archives are a very good place to search for
information, particularly discussions about future features and direction
of GRASS and many things are not documented anywhere else. Unfortunately,
it is more difficult to find things here than it used to be as
it is not archived on google any more, but you may search it on
http://grass.itc.it/searchgrass.html (when the server is not
overloaded...) More recent messages are also archived on gmane.org

For fixing small problems you find with GRASS it is worth considering
whether they should go into the 5.3.x series (which uses the 'grass' CVS
repository at http://freegis.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/grass/ ) or the
5.7.x series (which uses the 'grass51' CVS repository at
http://freegis.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/grass51/ and has a different
directory structure and build system).

At the minute, the 5.7.x series is harder to work with and less polished
but it will probably benefit the GRASS user community most for the future
if you contribute to it.
