[GRASS5] r.contour question

This is a simple question, but it is not mentioned in the manual

Does r.contour only produce integer output, even if the raster map is 
floating point?

That is the only way I can explain some funny results  I got when 
trying a demo contour map. The contour map looks fine, but the values 
do not. There are duplicate values on some adjacent lines and only 
integers show up in the cat values.
