re. 'r.support units='

automatically doing anything with that beyond reporting the
label is very problematic because the raster map does not
necessarily contain units of elevation.
(sunlight hours, contaminant concentration, etc.)

assuming it does is very dangerous to your data.

fwiw gnu units should not be treated as gospel. e.g. it silently
switches to US survey feet if it sees your locale is en_US. (!)
nevermind US survey feet is only used by about 11/50 states
since the last 20-40 years, and fewer each year, and locale 
means nothing ... !@#!@$%!!
