That may not be exactly our case since - according to the current draft on
the wiki page - the program involves mentorship, so you do get the benefit
of being mentored. The technical writing GSoC spinoff (which I'm not sure
if it is going on) was supposed to be "like GSoC," but without pay.

However, I'm open to a simple awards program without mentorship as well.
People now work on the project for many different reasons and when done,
students could newly apply for an award. Just work on GSoC (and potentially
any future OSGeo or GRASS paid work) would be excluded from being eligible
(no double-dipping to the OSGeo pool).
