PPM distorted text

This posting for Paul Handly of the NPS who dosen't have
internet access.  

Paul is using PPM with the following sequence
ppmtopgm file | pgmtopbm | pbmtolj | lp

Basically works but ---- horizontal text
is unreadable and some of the pixels are shifted horizontally
and 

he also asks how can the image be shifted on the page so
that the image could (for example) be centered.
