Batching GRASS jobs

I am running GRASS4.0 on a sun sparc station (sunos 4.1.2).
The majority of my work is done by shell scripts and I
would like to be able to background the procedure, and log
off (since much of the time I rlogin over phone lines).  I 
haven't figured a way around the interactive initilization
and exit procedures.  Anyone out there - doing backgrond jobs,
or have any suggestions?
