v.digit problem

Mike,
What projection are you working in? I noticed a similar situation when working
on the state of California in Lamberts Conformal Conic projection. It was
pretty obvious that it was a result of the geographic location in that 
particular projection.

One last thought. If you are running GRASS4.1, are you using update 4.1.2 or
newer? 4.1.1 has a bug in v.digit.
