Remove small polygons

Hello!


I have a raster map consisting of 1000 sub-areas of different category values.
Ca. 980 of the sub-areas are so small that I want to remove them, and set their
category-value equal to that of their surrounding areas. I want to remove a lot
of small "spots" to achieve a more uniform map of only ca 20 subareas. 

Can someone give a hint about the easiest way to do this.
