I did read this doc thoroughly knowing full well that one period out of place could cause problems. Nevertheless, the sdts utilis would not compile.

There is no space between the $@'s. Here's my makefile:
all: demout sdts2dem sdts2sur sdtsgrid sdts2arc sdts2rcz sdts2xyz
%: %.c
gcc -o $@$@.c -Wl,/usr/local/lib/libfips123.a
Is this what you used? Any thoughts?
