Thanks. I got a copy of shapelib and gen2shp and they are working beatifully.
Maybe the binary version GRASS that I'm using is broken, or perhaps it was not
working because I did not have PROJ.4 sh libs installed correctly. I'm only
guessing though because I got it working this other way. I took your advice and
am exporting in ESRI generate format and then converting w/ gen2shape. I used a
very recent version of shapelib 1.2.8 which just by the source code seems more
complete that the 1.1.5 ancestor.

BTW I would like to congratulate everyone here and include a piece of a mail I
sent to another person of this group who was alson helping me w/ this:

You know, in all, I am very impressed w/ GRASS. It's not that I'm a GIS expert,
on the
contrary I have found GRASS to be quite simple and straight forward for non-GIS
experts
like myself. I was impressed also because the way it handles topology and that
the
concepts (like area edge and line) used throughout the package are so coherent
and easy
to understand. I am very happy to be a GRASS user. I worked for about a year in a
GIS
company and played w/ many packages, but with GRASS everything has come very
intuitively
and the documentation is great. I hope to contribute someday to this awesome
package.
